Well, I don’t actually have two dads, but I have two fathers in my life that are very important to me, and so I wanted to write a little about them for Father’s Day. Even if it is a day late.
First, I’d like to tell you a little about my dad. One of the first things I think about when I think of my dad is his sense of humor. He’s a funny guy, who loves to tell funny stories. I remember a lot of good-natured joking around when I was growing up. My dad is also a good listener. He really engages in conversation with me, and tries to listen and understand what I’m talking about and respond thoughtfully. One of the things my dad did to cultivate this as I was growing up was taking walks together. I loved those walks we took. I remember collecting pop cans sometimes, picking up nuts from the trees we passed, and making friends with any cats that crossed our path. I really appreciate that my dad made time for daddy-daughter time, one on one. It made me feel special. Dad, you probably don’t hear this enough, but I sure love you.
The other great dad in my life is my husband, Mike. He is such a wonderful father to our little girls. It amazes me how much energy he has for running, dancing, pony rides, baseball, and anything else Amanda can think up. He recently got a job offer, and his biggest concern with the new job was whether they would be as family-friendly as his current job. Mike always tries to arrange his work schedule so he can get home by 4:30 and have playtime with the girls. (Some nights it takes Amanda so long to eat her dinner that she eats and then goes straight into bed, so you have to have playtime early.)
Mike loves to make our kids – and me – laugh, and he’s very good at it. He’s also the first one out of bed most times when Amanda wakes up crying in the middle of the night. We share household chores, and he’s a good chef too. Mike sets a great example for our kids in so many ways, and I know he’ll have a strong positive influence on them as they grow older. I can’t think of a better person to teach them about chores, work ethics, money, responsibility, and how to have a good time. Amanda and Kaitlyn’s faces light up when they see their daddy. And I know that, as much as Mike loves our girls, he loves me even more. Mike, I love you, and you’re a wonderful dad.
